January 1st, Tuesday, Start the Year Right - Riding a Bicycle

     Sleep in on New Year's Day if you want but then get up and join other club members for a New Year's Day Ride. Join me starting the year out right with Allyson and other Cascade members on a traditional Sammamish Lake Loop.
     Ride description - "What's your New Year's Resolution? Want to lose a few pounds? Get back on the bike again? Do the CHILLY HILLY this year? Well then, let's get started!!!! Join us for a friendly ride around Lake Sammamish. This ride will be at a high-leisurely low-steady pace. Midpoint break at Tully's in Issaquah.
     Meet at Tennis Court Parking lot, first left off Lake Sammamish Pkwy. Please bring $1 for parking. See you there!"

Ride Distance: 25-42 miles.
Ride Terrain: Trail and Urban Streets.

     Keeping with last weekend's theme we will do a ride from Gasworks Park giving us a lot of routes to select from. Depending on weather we will either ride all on trail, try a Lake Washington Loop or another great Seattle route starting from Gasworks Park that members select.

Victoria Tour 2008 - Planning Party!.
     Join Gail at her house in Kirkland for a planning party for the 2008 Victoria Tour, Memorial Day weekend. Hot chocolate and muffins will be served Planning for Victoria Outing, 2008. along with pictures, maps, and information Gail has collected on the tour.   Bring your ideas to share so we can make this the best year ever!

     Take I-405 to the Totem Lake exit 20B (124th St). Turn left at the light and go 1/2 mile to 100th Ave NE and turn right. Go 1/2 mile to NE 132th St and turn left into Albertson’s parking lot and park near the trail next to Bridlewood Apartments, you will see a rock wall. Take dirt foot path going north along cyclone fence to 134th St. Turn left onto 134th St and go to end of cul-de-sac to brown house #9752.

January 13th, Sunday, Auburn - Puyallup - South Prairie
Ride Start: Park n Ride, Auburn, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Foothills Trail - McMillin, WA. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 40-50 miles.
Ride Terrain: Flat Train, Rolling Country Roads.

Ride Details:
     Will test a new route going from Auburn south on the Interurban Trail to North Puyallup. From here, will pick up country roads along segments of Tour de Pierce course to McMillin where we will pick up the Foothills Trail to Orting and South Prairie.
     After a rest and nourishment will go the other way following part of our footsteps as well as picking up a few new country roads on our return to Auburn.

January 20th, Sunday, Southworth - Port Orchard
Ride Start: Fauntleroy Ferry Dock, West Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am ferry.
Camels grazing a local Southworth farm. Level: Social/Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 31 miles.
Ride Terrain: Rolling.

Ride Details:
     Ride will go from Southworth along the water through Manchester to Port Orchard. After a food stop at the Port Orchard Marina, will back track along the water to Southworth for the ferry home to Seattle. Bring $6.20 for ferry charge.

January 27th, Sunday, Biking along the Sound with a Spanish Flair
Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
La Isla - Seattle, Ballard, WA. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 22 Miles.
Ride Terrain: Mixed Interurban with some hills.

Ride Details:
     Will take the Burke-Gilman Trail west to Ballard. Here we cross over to Magnolia via the Ballard Locks and ride clockwise around the neighborhood along scenic Magnolia Blvd. At Discovery Park members will have an extra option to ride down to lighthouse point before joining others at the Indian Cultural Center.
     After a brief visit at the center, we will cross back over the locks and take 32nd Avenue to Golden Gardens Drive where we descend to the waterfront and bike along scenic Seaview Avenue to downtown Ballard for an end of ride meal at La Isla - Seattle on Market Street.
     Spanish Speaking Guides will assist riders not just with the directions but also with speaking a few words of Spanish and understanding the culture.

February 3rd, Sunday, Gasworks - Mercer Island

Ride Terrain: Rolling Urban with Some Pretty Good Climbs.

I-90 Bicycle Trail from Leschi to Mercer Island.      Since we haven't done this ride in quite a while, we will ride from Gasworks Park to Mercer Island and do the around the island loop. Depending on weather we can pick up a couple of extra 9 miles riding to Seward Park either on the way to Mercer Island or the way back.
     Mid ride stop will be at either Mercer Island's famous Roanoke Tavern or the new Mercer Island Bakery for refreshments and socilizing.

Chinese New Year - Year of the Rat - February 7th, 2008.

February 10th, Sunday, Kubota Gardens & International District
Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.

     To celebrate the Chinese New year we will bike along Lake Washington to Seward Park and Kubota Gardens, www.kubota.org. After a short visit at the gardens we will continue to Seattle's International District to view the new Chinatown Gate.
     In the International District we will stop at a local establishment such as Uwajimaya's for socializing and nourishment. Then we will bike along the Seattle Waterfront picking up the Seattle Downtown Bike Trail through Myrtle Edwards Park to lower Magnolia, along the Ship Canal, and back to Gasworks Park.

Ride Start: Tukwila Communicty Center, Tukwila, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Intersection of the Green River and Interurban Trails. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 26/42/88 Miles.
Ride Terrain: Mostly Flat Trail.

     With possible good weather on Sunday, we will ride from the Tukwila Community Center south on the Green River, Interurban and Foothills Trails.
     This route gives four good turnaround points either where the Green River and Interurban Trails cross or in Auburn, Sumner or South Prairie. We will bike as far as weather permits or as far as members want.

February 24th, Sunday, Chilly Hilly - 2008 Bicycling Season Opener

March 2nd, Sunday, Fall City - Carnation - Duvall
Ride Start: Quigley Park, Fall City, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Farm between Fall City and Carnation. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 26/41 miles.
Ride Terrain: Flat to Rolling.

Ride Details:
     This week's ride is on very scenic rural roads along the Snoqualmie and Tolt Rivers.
     There are several options for riders to select from either an all flat route on rural roads along the west side of the Snoqualmie River to McDonald Park and back (16 miles) or that same route with a slight rolling addition up and down the Tolt River Road (26 miles).
     Then for those wanting even more mileage they can continue the route to Duvall stretching it to 41 miles or even 50 miles and up if they also include the Tolt River Road and Lake Joy Loop.
     There will be ample resting spots along both routes for breaks and socializing. Be sure to bring snacks and/or sandwiches with you for breaks and lunch. (QFC in Carnation for buying something in route.)

March 8th-9th, Saturday/Sunday, International Bicycle Expo
Volunteers are needed. Most of us have been to Bike Expo, but how many of us have lent a hand? This year is your chance. Join me and other SBC members helping out on Saturday.

There are multiple ride options but so far members planning on attending are riding either the flat/rolling 34 mile loop or the 101 mile route (a combination of the 20, 34 and 47 mile loops).      The West Seattle to Kent Route is 50 miles of rolling urban streets and trail starting from the Alki Bakery. To shorten the route a bit and give us a better start point, we will start from Gateway Park.
     This is a good beginning of the season training ride offering a few climbs as well as mileage without making the ride too difficult.

April 20th, Sunday, Snohomish - Granite Falls/Arlington
Ride Start: Centennial Trail Head, Snohomish, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.

     This weeks ride gives cyclists two mileage options through scenic Snohomish County, 37 or 57 miles. Mid ride stops will be at Granite Falls and/or Arlington. See route maps for more information.
     This is an excellent training ride for members preparing for special event rides like the STP, RSVP or Tour de Whidbey. The ride is on fairly open roads, mostly flat to rolling with a few climbs. For members wanting to bike all on trail, the Centennial Trail allows a fun 35 mile out and back ride through the countryside.

Weekend of Cycling in the San Juan Islands.

April 26th, Saturday, 5th Annual - Tour de Lopez
     Event is limited to 800 riders and sells out very early.
Meeting Place: Anacortes Ferry Dock, WA - Directions.
Tour de Lopez - 2008. Meet: 8:15am for 8:45am ferry to Lopez Island.
Ride Distance: 10, 17 or 31 miles.
Ride Terrain: Rolling or Rolling/Hilly Country Roads.

     Join other members on this year's Tour de Lopez.
     Enjoy a scenic ferry ride from Anacortes to Lopez. Check-in for ride will be from 9:30-11am at Odlin County Park – a short ride from the Ferry landing. Pick up your route map, lunch voucher, and details about the day's ride. Tour routes will include marked designated halfway points with snacks, water & restrooms. Your ride will conclude in the Village Park with a BBQ lunch presented by the Bay Cafe from 1-3pm.

April 27th, Sunday, San Juan Island
Ride Start: Anacortes Ferry Dock, Anacortes, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9am for 9:30am ferry.
San Juan Island's Lime Kiln Point - 
Famous for Whale Watching. Ride Details:
     Everyone joining the group on Sunday will meet at the ferry dock for the Anacortes to Friday Harbor Ferry. Ferry fare is $17.15. Terminal parking is $10/day. Members coming up on Saturday will be staying over at a hotel or campsite on either Lopez or San Juan Island. Contact the leads for more information.
     Allow 2 hours to drive from Seattle, park, get ticket, etc. You can either park at the terminal for a fee or near Skyline Marina on the street for free.
     Full ride is 44 miles with options to shorten. There are hills but they aren't killer. See Other Washington Routes in Maps Library.
     Early lunch at Roche Harbor at around 11am or bring your own and eat at San Juan Island State Park on the west side of the island.
     To complete the full pull, you must swim at Cattle point with Jerry.
     Oysters and micro beers (or ice cream) at end of ride. And if we miss the 4:20pm ferry, we could eat dinner there.
     There is also a 7:45am ferry arriving at Friday Harbor at 9:30am for anyone wanting to get an early start. Members coming the day before are staying at the Roche Harbor Inn.

May 4th, Sunday, Tukwila/Auburn - Sumner - South Prairie
Ride Start (90 miles): Tukwila Community Center - Map/Directions.
Ride Start (60 miles or less): Auburn Park & Ride - Map/Directions.
Meet (90 miles): 8am for 8:30am start.
Tukwila Park. Meet (60 miles): 9:30am for 10am start.
Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distances: 60/90 miles.
Ride Terrain: Flat Trail and Urban Streets.

     This is the ride everyone has been asking for, 90 miles of totally flat trail from Tukwila to South Prairie and back with a hill option near Sumner for anyone wanting a little extra challenge. We will start this ride earlier than normal because of the distance.
     Since not everyone wants to ride 90 miles, we will have a shorter ride (60 miles or less) starting at our normal time from the Auburn Park and Ride. This route will have several nice turnaround points so members can select the distance that is right for them. Both groups will meet up on the Interuban Trail in front of the Emerald Downs Racetrack at about 10:15am.
     Be sure to come prepared (water and snacks) for a nice long day of cycling. The Foothills Trail is extremely picturesque so also come prepared for some unbelieveable scenery. Mid ride lunch stop in Orting.

     Will ride the loop from Snohomish, along the river, to scenic north Everett and then along the other side of the river, back to Snohomish. It's about 40 miles, almost all flat. Lunch at Picadilly Circus in Snohomish. Very good food. No maps needed. The route is a combined route from two other library maps.

May 24th-26th, Sat-Mon, Memorial Day Weekend Outing to Victoria
     This year’s Victoria Tour will take place all on Vancouver Island in the vicinity of Victoria B.C. Tour includes three days of cycling, two overnight stays in Victoria, two dinners out, and two Butchard Gardens, Canada. ferry rides. Art and Anne have volunteered to be SAG wagon drivers this year. They will carry your belongings from Sidney to Victoria and return. This is a fun and challenging tour for both the recreational and intermediate cyclist. There will be a choice of routes on days 1 and 2 and the pace will be steady at 11-14 mph.
Day 1 -
     Start your tour from Anacortes where we park our cars overnight and catch ferry to Sidney B.C. Depart ferry and ride your bicycle to Butchart Gardens for a grand garden tour ($25). Ride from Butchart Gardens to Victoria via secondary roads (26 mi). There will be a longer tour for those skipping the garden tour taking you from Sidney to Swartz Bay to Victoria. Overnight accommodations at lovely Admiral Inn ($119 CAD-2 persons) located on inner harbor near Clipper Terminal. All rooms are large, clean, non-smoking, and have a balcony, color cable TV, telephone, refrigerator, and coffee maker. Accommodations can be shared to save expenses. Sightseeing in Victoria is excellent and will be at your own discretion. Dinner will be at a “nice” Victoria restaurant.
Day 2 -
     Wake up to complimentary breakfast at hotel. You have a choice of tours: (A) Scenic city tour of Victoria (15 mi), followed by lunch and sightseeing, for those not wanting a full day of cycling. (B) Galloping Goose Trail to scenic Esquimalt Lagoon and Fisgard Lighthouse (30 mi), (C) Galloping Goose Trail and roads west (40-50 mi) for riders not interested in Victoria city tour. This route will take you to Esquimalt Lagoon area and further west on paved roads in Colwood, West Shore, Langford, and View Royal. The return trip will be on paved portion of Galloping Goose Trail back to Victoria. Tours A and B can be combined for a full day of cycling totaling 45 miles. Dinner will be at a “nice” restaurant in Victoria.
Day 3 -
     Wake up to complimentary breakfast at hotel. Return by bicycle to Sidney on Lochside Regional Trail (20 mi). As you travel from Victoria to Sidney, scenery changes from city urban, to suburban backyards, to country farmland. Trail is mostly flat with paved and compact gravel sections suitable for skinny tires. Visit “great” bakery in Sidney before going through customs at ferry terminal. Depart Sidney ferry to Anacortes where we pick-up our cars and drive home.

     Since the play starts at 7:30 pm, we will take picnic sandwiches and eat near the theater, or walk around the lake before the play, depending on the weather. June 1st, Sunday, Fall City - Carnation - Duvall
Ride Start: Quigley Park, Fall City, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
SBC members around the Fall City Totem Pole. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 26/41 miles.
Ride Terrain: Flat to Rolling.

Ride Details:
     This week's ride is on very scenic rural roads along the Snoqualmie and Tolt Rivers.
     There are several options for riders to select from either an all flat route on rural roads along the west side of the Snoqualmie River to McDonald Park and back (16 miles) or that same route with a slight rolling addition up and down the Tolt River Road (26 miles).
     Then for those wanting even more mileage they can continue the route to Duvall stretching it to 41 miles or even 50 miles and up if they also include the Tolt River Road and Lake Joy Loop.
     There will be ample resting spots along both routes for breaks and socializing. Be sure to bring snacks and/or sandwiches with you for breaks and lunch. (QFC in Carnation for buying something in route.)

June 1st, Sunday, North Bend - Snoqualmie Falls - Fall City
Ride Start: North Bend, WA - Map/Directions.
SBC members biking through Ernie's Grove. Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Levels: Beginning, Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 30/47 miles.
Ride Terrain: Rolling/Hilly.

     From North Bend we will go east out of town and then loop back to Ernie's Grove and Snoqualmie Falls. This route is mostly on scenic rural King County roads along with a short section on paved trail.
     Riders will be broken into two groups, Beginning/Social and Intermediate. Beginning/Social Riders will stay on flat to rolling roads from North Bend to the falls where all will break for mid-ride nourishment and socializing.
     Intermediate Riders will take the same route but continue downhill at the falls to Fall City for an extra seventeen miles.
     Everyone will meet afterwards in North Bend for cherry pie.

June 7th, Saturday, Wenatchee Sunrise Rotary Bike Ride
     Join other club members at this year's Wenatchee Apple Century, from Wenatchee, Washington to Lake Chelan along the beautiful Columbia River - 50 and 100 mile options.

June 8th, Sunday, Riding on Vashon Island
Ride Start: Fauntleroy Ferry Dock, West Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 8:45am for 9:15am ferry.
Robinson Lighthouse, Maury Island - Vashon Island. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 34 miles.
Ride Terrain: Very Hilly.

     Everyone will meet in the north Lincoln Park parking lot. Bring $5.30 for ferry fare. (If you are late, ride straight to ferry dock to meet others.)
     Vashon Island is noted for hills so all riders must be prepared to do some hill climbs with their bikes.
     We will ride the main 27 mile loop going down the west side of the island and returning up the east side along the water to the City of Vashon for mid-ride nourishment and socializing at a local establishment. Riders wanting a few extra miles can add in Reddings Beach Road, the Burton Loop and 171st Street for a total of 34 miles.
     For riders wanting even more mileage and willing to help lead a longer route, Maury Island can be added to give you close to 52 miles.

June 15th, Sunday, Gas Conservation Ride from Seattle Central
Ride Start: Gasworks Park,Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Save fuel and start in Seattle. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 30-45 miles.
Ride Terrain: Mixed Urban.

     With gasoline now costing over $4/gallon, members are asking for a ride that won't break the bank just for them to attend. Thus, this week we decided to have a ride starting midway between everyone to help with the pocketbook.
     We will meet at Gasworks Park which many members can bike to and central to others to lessen their commute.
     Since we weren't sure which ride members would want, we are going to leave that open to who shows up, North Lake Washington, South Lake Washingtion, Mercer Island Loop, Gasworks to Edmonds,... Your choice. All you have to do is show up to vote.
     If desired we will have more than one loop with an idea to meet somewhere in-between for all to socialize as a group.

June 20th-22nd, Friday-Sunday, Weekend at Fish Lake - 2008
     This is a new outing for SBC members, their families Fish Lake near Lake Wenatchee. and friends. Camping will be the primary focus, but there are other accommodations within easy rendezvous distance of the activities. A group bike ride of approximately 39 miles is planned for Saturday, leaving plenty of time for free association at camp in the evening. Perhaps a Liar’s Council around the campfire.
     Ride level will be mostly intermediate on rolling country roads with one huge climb which can be walked with no shame to take in the view. After climb, it’s a 1 mile fast descent and then a super easy lope to Leavenworth for lunch.
Location -
     Lake Wenatchee/Fish Lake Recreation Area, located approximately 25 miles east of Stevens Pass, 20 miles west of Leavenworth. Area is ideal for family outings and cycling, whether on mountain or road bike.

June 29th, Sunday, Logboom Park - Lake Sammamish
Ride Start: Logboom Park, Kenmore, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Logboom Park - Tracy Owen Station, Kenmore, WA. Levels: Social and Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 23/45 Miles.
Ride Terrain: Mixed Interurban and Trail.

     Will take the Burke-Gilman/Sammamish Trails east to Marymoor Park. At park will exit trail and circle Lake Sammamish on urban streets with bike lanes.
     Mid ride stop either at Tulley's at far end of lake or near Marymoor Park at Larry's Grocery.
     Trail section of ride is ~23 miles. Lake loop is ~22 miles. You can do either both or just the trail section for a shorter more relaxed ride. Loop section of route is flat to rolling roads.

July 5th, Saturday, Rider Courtesy Escorts Needed
         Logboom Park - Gasworks Park - Myrtle Edwards Park
Ride Start: Logboom Park, Lake Forest Park, WA - Map/Directions.

     Riders will meet at Logboom Park and head south along the Burke-Gilman to Myrtle Edwards Park to meet two visiting tour riders at the Olympic Sculpture Park Fountain.
     Both cyclists are new to Seattle and our club has volunteered to support this portion of their travels. We will guide them through the Ballard Locks to view running sockeye, then to Gasworks Park for pictures from The Gasworks Hill. From here we will head north on trail back to Lake Forest Park where we will meet John at Great Harvest Bread Company.
     John will escort our visitors up the Interurban to the Mukilteo Ferry for the next leg of their journey. Members only wanting a 32 mile route can stop at this point and return to Logboom and those wanting more mileage can continue north with John to Mukilteo.

July 6th, Sunday, Mukilteo - Everett Scenic Route
Ride Start: Rose Hill Community Center, Mukilteo, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Scouting Tour de Muk. Levels: Social/Recreational.
Ride Distance: 26 miles.
Ride Terrain: Winding, rolling urban arterials with bike lanes and quiet neighborhood streets.

     This ride will be for the purpose of collecting rider feedback concerning the route for the upcoming Mukilteo Lighthouse Festival's Tour de Muk ride in August. Meet at Rosehill Community Center at 3rd and Lincoln in Mukilteo, a few blocks up from the ferry dock.
     The route heads east on Mukilteo Blvd and goes thru Forest Park and the most scenic parts of Everett, taking in fabulous views of the bay, mountains, waterfront and historic neighborhoods.
     Lunch at Marina Village. Return thru Downtown Everett to the north terminus of the Interurban, then returning to Mukilteo Blvd, because you absolutely have to see it twice. The Blvd portion is mostly flat to rolling terrain, with the Everett portion all flat.

July 12th/13th, Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic
STP - 2008.      This 200-mile bicycle ride is the largest multi-day bicycle event in the Northwest, with up to 9,000 participants riding from Seattle to Portland in one or two days. The route takes you through the scenic valleys, forests, and farmlands of western Washington and Oregon.
     This year SBC members will have a sag vehicle go ahead of them to setup an SBC campsite for club members at the mid-way point and prepare for their arrival. Selected campsite will be Winlock High School (14 miles south of Chehalis).
     If you would like to ride with other members and stay with them at the mid-way point campsite email our club contact to get your name on the list and find out details of what to expect and how to plan.
     Anyone wanting his/her tent setup at Winlock High School should bring it to the July 5th/6th rides for Jim or Anne to place in sag vehicle. We have several groups biking at different speeds. Let people know if you want to ride with them. Dinner plans are for eating at the school cafeteria. You must get campsite and/or dinner ticket from Cascade.

July 20th, Sunday, Snohomish - Monroe - Sultan
Ride Start: Centennial Trailhead, Snohomish, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.

Ride Distance: 38/46 Miles.
Ride Terrain: Rolling country with 1 steep hill.

     Starting from the Centennial Trailhead we will go southeast out of Snohomish on the Old Snohomish Hwy. From Monroe we will pick up Ben Howard Road and follow along the Skykomish River to Sultan for a mid-ride break.
     After a little rest, will head back to Snohomish as we came.
     Most of this route is flat or rolling with just one hill climb between Monroe and Sultan. The route is 38 miles with an optional 8 miles out and back on Mann Road before Sultan.

July 26th-28th, Fri-Mon, Weekend at Whistler - 2008
     Our Whistler Outing is scheduled for July 26-28.
     Whistler, Canada. For those of you who haven't been there Whistler has a huge system of bike trails. Some are paved, many are forest roads and trails that are easy to ride with off road tires. Jim has volunteered to lead road rides for the folks who don't want to mountain bike. The rest of us can explore the lakes, rivers and forests off road.
     Summer is off season at Whistler and it's an opportunity to stay at a world class resort at very reasonable rates. Last year last minute specials in 5 star resorts went for about $100 per night. Most rooms have cooking facilities and bike storage. There are also some local hostels and a campground.

RSVP - 2008.      The RSVP is the STP in reverse and if there is one thing our club is good at it's doing the unexpected. So plan now so you can go. Along with needing room reservations, you will need an event bib number and this event sells out early season.
     Since I have ridden the RSVP six times already, I can help with information on rooms and roommates as well as arranging some fun SBC gatherings along the way.

     The Auburn - Green River Gorge Route is a fun spring route, not too long through extremely scenic rural areas. This route has several complimentary routes for members wanting more mileage of 41 or 55 miles.

Event Route Details:
     26-mile Scenic Ride: Take a pleasant tour of Mukilteo & Everett waterfront - a few hills, some bike trails, a rest stop and lots & lots of scenery!
     16-mile Challenge Ride: A moderate ride (3 hills) with brethtaking views - all in Mukilteo.
     3-mile Family Fun Ride: A level bike route heading East on Mukilteo Blvd and returning.
     Safety Clinic: Before ride, get bike & helmet checked for safety.
     Free Tike & Bike Rally (Children 6 and under): Riding skills, games & safety awareness. Hours: 9-11am on grass next to Rosehill. Lots of prizes!

September 7th, Sunday, Kubota Gardens & Chief Sealth Trail
Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.

     We will bike along Lake Washington to Seward Park and Kubota Gardens, www.kubota.org. After a short visit at the gardens we will continue on the new Chief Sealth Trail to Seattle's International District.
     In the International District we will stop at Uwajimaya's for socializing and nourishment. Then we will bike along the Seattle Waterfront picking up the Seattle Downtown Bike Trail through Myrtle Edwards Park to lower Magnolia, along the Ship Canal, and back to Gasworks Park.

     Starting from Gasworks Park we will bike south along Lake Washington to the I-90 Bike Trail and Mercer Island. Here we will learn a little island history as we cycle the 14-mile Mercer Island Loop.
     Afterwards, we will head to the Mercer Island Farmer's Market for nourishment, socializing and fun, www.mifarmersmarket.org.
     Our return trip will be west back across the I-90 Bike Trail. In Seattle we will select from multiple fun return routes to get home.

     The Rising Star Guild and Lakemont Ladies Cycling Club have joined forces in an effort to support Eastside Domestic Violence Programs (EDVP) through Cycle the WAVE.
     Cycle the WAVE, a non-competitive, sponsored, all-women’s bicycle ride through Bellevue, Issaquah, South King County, Maple Valley, Renton and Newcastle was created by women passionate about cycling, who have bonded together through friendship, fitness and the desire to make a difference.
     All sponsorship proceeds benefit EDVP and the women and children in King County who have experienced physical, emotional or sexual abuse. For details, click here.

     Right now the plan is to catch the 7am or 7:30am ferry from Mukilteo to Clinton and start riding at 9am. This gives everyone time to get to the start and eat a nice stack of pancakes before leaving.

     New this year will be a flat to rolling family loop so that the whole family can attend. More information coming.

     With possible good weather on Sunday, we will ride from the Tukwila Community Center south on the Green River, Interurban and Foothills Trails.
     This route gives four good turnaround points either where the Green River and Interurban Trails cross or in Auburn, Sumner or South Prairie. We will bike as far as weather permits or as far as members want.

     Join other SBC members on this year's Kitsap Color Classic. Meet either at the Masonic Lodge from 8am till 9am for the Pancake Breakfast or at 9am at registration. We will take the 9:20am ferry so don't be late. Decisions on what loops we will ride this year will be made as a group on the ferry so everyone gets to help decide.
     Since parking can be a little tricky for the second ferry, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to park and register.

Ride Start: Parking Area, Tiger Mountain, WA - Map/Directions.

     This is a relentless 4 mile, 1700 ft, hills training ride on gravel logging roads. Mountain bikes are recommended, but any bike with knobby tires will work just so they are geared low enough. Great views at the top and a screaming downhill return to the parking lot. This is an at your own pace ride.
     Bring food/snacks for the ride. There are no food/water facilities.

October 11th/12th, Sat/Sun, Mountain Biking in Winthrop
Ride Start: Three Fingered Jacks Saloon, Downtown Winthrop, WA.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.

some pavement, some easy single track.

     Rides will be Saturday... probably the Rendezvous area between Winthrop and Mazama and Sunday.... Pipestone Canyon. Mountain bikes or cross bikes will work. Pace is steady but some level of fitness is required. Carry snacks although there MAY be lunch possibilities.

October 12th, Sunday, Fort Ebey State Park Mountain Biking
Ride Start: Fort Ebey State Park, Whidbey Island - Map/Directions.

     This is a mountain bike ride - mountain bikes only. The park has over 25 miles of singletrack for all levels of mountain bikers. We will explore trails that provide fun and challenge. Fort Ebey State Park sits partially in the rain shadow of the Olympics so it stays pretty dry all year long. However, it can get wet, and if it does, you will get wet and dirty.
     Bring a change of clothes just in case. Also, bring food/snacks for the ride. There are no food facilities in the park.
     We are planning to take the 10:00am ferry from Mukilteo.

October 18th, Saturday, Redmond Rambler Route
Ride Start: Redhook Brewery, Woodinville, WA - Map/Directions.

     The ride is for mountain bikes only.
     This training ride uses the Sammamish River, Puget Power and Tolt Pipeline Trails. To hook it all together there is a little bit of exploring through the Redmond Watershed.
     This ride is ~22 miles with 1300 feet of climb. Please bring snacks with you for on ride refueling.

     The route is on trail to Bothell where it diverts to sparcely traveled county roads. After a break and snacks in Downtown Snohomish we travel south and again rejoining the trail in Woodinville.
     After ride socializing and fun will be at the Redhook Brewery.
     If weather is bad, will do the Lake Sammamish Lake Loop - 33 miles.

     The Wild Horse Wind Farm is 20 miles east of Ellensburg along the old highway to Vantage.
     Since wind farm tours are at 10am we will meet at the wind farm at 9:45am, take the 10am tour (~45 minutes) and start the ride from there afterwards. As you can see from the route (see below) there are lots of options to shorten the ride if we want to for any reason.
     Bring food/snacks. There will be no places along the route to buy anything until Ellensburg at around 2pm.

     The route starts out in Kenmore and follows roads through Kirkland picking up the I-520 Bike Trail and following it to Redmond. Lunch or coffee at Larry's Market in Redmond. Return on the Sammamish River Trail to Logboom. There will be one optional steep hill climb up Junita Hill for those that want a little extra challenge.

Ride Start: Quigley Park, Fall City, WA - Map/Directions.

Ride Details:
     This week's ride is on very scenic rural roads along the Snoqualmie and Tolt Rivers.
     There are several options for riders to select from either an all flat route on rural roads along the west side of the Snoqualmie River to McDonald Park and back (16 miles) or that same route with a slight rolling addition up and down the Tolt River Road (26 miles).
     Then for those wanting even more mileage they can continue the route to Duvall stretching it to 41 miles or even 50 miles and up if they also include the Tolt River Road and Lake Joy Loop.
     There will be ample resting spots along both routes for breaks and socializing. Be sure to bring snacks and/or sandwiches with you for breaks and lunch. (QFC in Carnation for buying something in route.)

     Go Saturday, Sunday or both days for a fun weekend of off-road biking.
     The Cranberry Lake trails provide some lush, classically northwest, in-town singletrack suitable for the adventurous beginner. Rooty, rocky, twisting, forested roller coaster without as much steep climbing, but also without the corresponding distant views. Numerous spots along the route feature two distinct lines, or even trail splits, with a more beginner-friendly line and a more advanced line.

     Start time is noon at Dash Point Highlands Park at 5300 SW 324th Street in Federal Way. The meeting place is a neighborhood park outside of the state park. Terrain is mostly single track.

Ride Details:
     Ride will go from Southworth along the water through Manchester to Port Orchard. After a food stop at the Port Orchard Marina, will back track along the water to Southworth for the ferry home to Seattle. Bring $6.20 for ferry charge.

December 21st, Sunday, Gasworks - North Lake Washington Loop
Ride Start: Gasworks Park, Seattle, WA - Map/Directions.
Meet: 9:30am for 10am start.
Members playing on Downtown Kirkland Cow Sculpture. Level: Social/Intermediate.
Ride Distance: 42 miles.
Ride Terrain: Mixed Urban.

     Will ride from Gasworks Park to Kirkland for pastries and warm coffee, and either continue around the lake (across Mercer Island) or return back the way we came.

December 24th, Wednesday, 'Twas the Day Before Christmas
Ride Start: Tracy Owen/Logboom Park - Map/Directions.
Meet: 10am for 10:30am start.
Merry Christmas. Levels: Social.
Ride Distance: 20-30 miles.
Ride Terrain: Mostly Flat.

Ride Details:
     Since it is Christmas, I thought it would be fun for those that want to get in a ride the day before to join me on Jan Johnson's Cascade Ride. This is a fun time to see others in the biking community outside of our club and a great opportunity to wish a wonderful ride leader a very Merry Christmas.
Think we can get a new bike in our stocking?      Ride description - "It is the Eight Annual Day Before Christmas Ride. Are your holiday preparations done? Whether yes or no, you need to get out on your bike if the weather is fine. Let's have a sociable ride to Redmond for lunch. There might be one section of tricky traffic."
     I will bring chocolate truffles to the ride to help everyone get in the Christmas spirit. If you happen to have some reindeer antlers, be sure to wear them (on top your helmet).
